The exhibition will feature 40 iconic guitars on loan from the National Guitar Museum in the USA, alongside an awe-inspiring assemblage of paintings, drawings, objects, poster art and iconic rock photography.

The far-reaching collection of classical to contemporary works on display tracks the history of the guitar from its medieval beginnings through to its pivotal role in blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll music.

Medieval to Metal at the Art Gallery of Ballarat will be a one-of-a-kind exhibition with a curated collection of loaned and acquired works, amplifying the iconography of the guitar throughout culture and history.

“We're making it our own exhibition by using works from our own collection that are relevant and putting them in the show,” Louise Tegart, Art Gallery of Ballarat Director, says.

"We have also contracted local artists to create pieces specifically for this exhibition.

“We expect that the exhibition will draw thousands of visitors of all ages and music genres to Ballarat over the four-month run."

Alongside the exhibition will be a full program of events and concerts that celebrate local and national classical and contemporary guitar music.

The exhibition is set to take over more than just the gallery, with local bars and restaurants supporting the exhibition through specially designed guitar-themed drinks, dishes and events.

Medieval to Metal: The Art and Evolution of the Guitar will be at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 12 October 2024 – 2 February 2025.
