Management works at former Black Hill Landfill site, known as Chisholm Street Reserve

Entrance to the Chisolm Street Reserve

Project overview

Works are required to address items identified by the independent EPA appointed Auditor at the former Black Hill Landfill site, and include:

  • Installation of a gas interception trench, placed immediately south of the residential properties on Leerama Court, to intercept, naturally treat and passively vent any potential landfill gas to the atmosphere via biofilters at either end of the interceptor.
  • Depressions in the landfill surface will be filled and graded to improve stormwater runoff and reduce water infiltration and subsequent leachate generation.

The required works will further enhance the long-term protection of human health and the environment and meet the City of Ballarat’s obligations to manage the site responsibly under the Local Government Act 2020 and the Environmental Protection Act 2017.

Site access

During construction, approximately 5ha of the 11ha Chisholm Street Reserve will remain open to the public. These areas can still be used as dog off lead spaces.

The carpark and pergola will not be available for use while works are being undertaken, as this area will be used by the construction company for temporary site management and access.

View or download the site map - this provides an indication of the areas of the reserve that will remain open to the public; however, this is indicative only pending operational variances that could occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there still be space to let my dog off-leash?

Yes, about 40% of the reserve will remain open during construction works, and more will be opened while the grass is re-establishing.

Are there other dog off-leash areas nearby?

Yes, Ballarat has ten other dog parks to explore with the nearest two being Gregory Street Reserve in Soldiers Hill and Pennyweight Park Dog Park in Ballarat East. See our Dog parks page for more information.

Will any trees be lost?

No trees are planned to be removed with most of the works occurring away from the trees on site, however some works are close to existing trees that may need some branches or roots pruned to facilitate the works. These pruning works will be performed by a qualified arborist.

What days and hours will the works occur?

Monday to Saturday: 7am to 5:30pm

Sundays and Public Holidays: No works without prior written consent

My property abuts the reserve, do I have anything to worry about?

No, the landfill was closed in the 1980’s so there are no present dangers, and the works are preventative to minimise potential harm to public and environmental health. Furthermore, the contractor is required to rectify any damage done to adjoining properties and park infrastructure.
