Mayors Message Thursday 18 November 2021

Update from the Mayor

It is great to see that the wild and wet weather is not dampening our spirits in the lead up to Christmas with people out and about enjoying getting back to a new sense of normality.

Last week saw our Ballarat Animal Shelter awarded Australia’s most ‘Outstanding Council Animal Shelter 2021’ by the Pet Insurance Australia Companion Animal Rescue Awards.

It is tremendous recognition for everyone associated with the Animal Shelter’s hard work and constant dedication to improving the welfare of our rehomed, abandoned and rescued animals.

The City of Ballarat will continue to advocate for a new and improved regional animal shelter facility to cater for this essential service. This week we invite you to have your say on why we need the new facility on our web MySay page.

Each year on 3 December people gather to mark the anniversary of the historic attack by Victorian Colonial Military Forces on protesting miners at the Eureka Stockade.

Under the auspices of the City of Ballarat, a program of events will be presented at the Eureka Centre to mark this 167th anniversary. To help celebrate the occasion, entry fees to the Eureka Centre will be removed from 3-5 December.

I encourage you to take this opportunity to discover or rediscover, this incredibly important part of Australian history which is such a part of the City of Ballarat’s cultural foundation.

I am excited to see the release of the ‘IN MY SKIN’ Spotify podcast giving such an important voice to our Ballarat youth. It’s the brainchild of the 2021 City of Ballarat Youth Council and a great platform to hear the issues our youth care about, including all too real challenges, achievements and lived experiences. Coinciding with Trans Awareness Week this Saturday will see the first podcast ‘Queer Matters’ with new episodes on Saturdays throughout November and December; all well worth checking out.
