Celebrate Summer at Summer Sundays

Residents and visitors are in for a treat this Sunday 16 January with an abundance of events in Ballarat.

City of Ballarat Councillor, Amy Johnson said following the conclusion of the Federation University Road Cycling National Championships, the Summer Sundays free concert series will continue from 4 to 8pm in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.

“We have an incredible weekend of events with the culmination of RoadNats, the second of our amazing Summer Sundays events and our spectacular fireworks on at 9.30 the same evening,” she said.

“It is going to be a fantastic weekend with something for everyone.

“Last week was the perfect combination of weather, surrounds and amazing music, an incredible start to the 4-part concert series, with live performances bringing the audience to their feet. I am excited about this week’s line-up."

This Summer Sunday’s artists will feature modern Australian rock icon Adalita, best known as front woman for the multi-ARIA Award nominated Aussie rock band Magic Dirt.

Adalita has forged a successful solo career blitzing the music scene and is currently working on her highly anticipated third solo album.

Joining her on the Summer Sundays stage is The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra. This mammoth 18-piece ensemble, inspired by the infectious afro-beat music of Nigeria, is set to take the audience on a percussive journey into contemporary African funk.

The line-up also includes D’Arcy Spiller, whose song Wolf Blood has made a significant impact on the sound waves and is not to be missed live.

Ballarat’s own Tim Currie completes this week's Summer Sundays bill. Tim blends pop hooks and lush sounds with relatable lyrics to create wistful music that tells tales.

Katy Steele will no longer be able to perform at Summer Sundays due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Cr Johnson said in addition to the live music, a selection of food and beverage vendors would be onsite, along with the pop-up Garden Bar.

A limited number of bean bags were available for the audience to lounge, or people could bring a rug and picnic for a relaxed afternoon of free live music.

“Events such as Summer Sundays not only provide fantastic entertainment, but the City of Ballarat also recognises the tremendous support they bring to our local businesses,” Cr Johnson said.

“This weekend will once again be a fantastic opportunity to showcase all that Ballarat has to offer to our many visitors.”

After Summer Sundays, the Fireworks Spectacular will take place at Lake Wendouree with the 15-minute fireworks display launching at 9:30pm.

The Fireworks Spectacular is set to be the biggest Ballarat has ever seen, lighting up the night sky.

Summer Sundays is a free concert series and a COVID Safe event. Patrons will need to check-in to the Summer Sundays event at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on arrival.
