National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The NAIDOC theme for 2024 is a strong statement to make space for connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week events extend through the weeks bookending the National Week, so there are plenty of ways to celebrate.

Some of the events facilitated by the City of Ballarat include:

  • Wadawurrung Education Session with Ballarat Libraries - Learn about local Wadawurrung plants and trees with a Wadawurrung member. Plant your own seed to grow in your garden. 
  • Parent Place NAIDOC week craft and book reading activities
  • City of Ballarat umbrella Iane Aboriginal flag installation 
  • Yarrowee River Heritage Co-design Project at Eureka Centre 
  • Weaving workshop for over 55s at Perridak Arts with Aging Well Services

Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held locally, online and across the country.

We come from different backgrounds and cultures, but as a community we share a culture of growing and learning together in the same schools, businesses, workplaces, recreation spaces and services. Ballarat, as an Intercultural City, builds on the concept of all of us living together in a vibrant, diverse and harmonious community.
