Shaping our Future Housing Growth

News Update

The City of Ballarat is seeking public input for a draft Ballarat Housing Strategy to ensure the City can responsibly accommodate an expected population boom through a balanced and informed approach.

“We’re currently planning for an additional 50,000 residents to be living in Ballarat by 2040, which is fantastic. However, we need to ensure we can not only meet those growing and diverse needs, but that our housing options are sustainable and equitable and align with community values and expectations,” Ballarat Mayor, Cr Daniel Moloney said.

“Planning for growth and agreeing on new housing options can be tricky in heritage Cities like Ballarat. “This Council is aware of the need to balance those opportunities presented by ongoing growth with the need to preserve Ballarat’s unique qualities that contribute to our liveable city reputation,” he said.

For this reason, the Ballarat Housing Strategy will be delivered alongside the Ballarat Neighbourhood Character Study with previous community engagement informing the Strategy.

To assist the process, a Ballarat Housing Discussion Paper has been prepared and outlines the broad range of considerations that will inform the Housing Strategy.

The community is encouraged to contribute to the conversation by:

Completing the Ballarat Housing Discussion Paper survey;

Attending an online drop-in session and

Visiting the City of Ballarat’s  mySay site for more detailed information including the Draft Ballarat Neighbourhood Character Assessment, Ballarat Growth Areas and the Ballarat CBD Urban Design Framework

The Draft Housing Strategy is expected to be released for community consultation in mid 2021.
