Selkirk Stadium slam dunks second stage of development
The City of Ballarat has taken a big step forward in aiming to be Australia’s regional centre for 3x3 basketball with the completion of stage two works at Selkirk Stadium (formerly Ballarat Sports and Events Centre).
Funded as part of the State Government’s election commitment $5.2million sports development grant, the centre has seen three new 3x3 basketball courts, one mobile 3x3 court for events, a regional strength and conditioning centre and a learning centre and façade upgrade.
City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Daniel Moloney said Council recognises the importance of developing sporting options and facilities at every level to encourage participation and provide healthy recreational choices across the Ballarat community.
“This second stage of development for the Selkirk Stadium is very much aligned to one of our key Council Plan 2021-2025 goal initiatives of a healthy, connected and inclusive community,” Cr Moloney said.
“It showcases Ballarat’s investment in supporting sport for everyone. In particular it recognises the need to foster youth sport and sports options, for long term social, recreational and economic benefit.
“This is a development that shows our commitment to basketball in Ballarat. It acknowledges the importance of helping athletes physically off the court through the new strength and conditioning facility, as well as helping build their mental preparedness through the new learning centre facility.”
This weekend will see the 3x3 Big Hustle National Championships showcasing Australia’s best 3x3 basketballers competing over two days.
“Ballarat is aiming to become Australia’s regional home of 3x3 Basketball and the completion of stage two works at Selkirk Stadium and the National 3x3 Big Hustle takes us a couple of steps closer to achieving that,” Cr Moloney said.
