Revised Tree Removal and Landscape Reinstatement Plan for Binney Reserve
Following community consultation in late 2020, a revised tree removal and landscape reinstatement plan has been developed for Binney Reserve in Black Hill.
A revised tree removal and landscape reinstatement plan was created in response to an independent audit of the reserve which recommended the removal of pine trees due to a risk to public safety.
The updated plan has considered community feedback about the impact of the loss of the trees from the reserve and now proposes their removal in two stages over two years.
A letter with details of the revised plan was sent to residents near the reserve this week.
The first stage is planned to start in late July or early August this year, with the second scheduled for June and July 2022.
Replacement plantings of native trees and shrubs would occur following both stages, along with supporting landscape works including improvements to surface conditions for drainage, mulched beds and granitic sand path connections.
The updated plan and a question and answer document can be viewed at the Binney Reserve page on mySay.ballarat.vic.gov.au.
City of Ballarat Director Infrastructure and Environment Bridget Wetherall said there will be a strong focus on ensuring there is a mixture of indigenous vegetation planted across the reserve.
“In addition to the new plantings through the areas where the trees will be removed, there will be further plantings closer to Chisholm Street.
“Council will certainly welcome the involvement of the stakeholders and wider community with the revegetation works across the reserve.”
As the trees within stage two will remain for a longer period than first outlined, City of Ballarat arborists will continue to conduct regular inspections of the remaining trees across this area in advance of their planned removal.
“We understand that this project has generated strong community interest, however with the planned removal and ongoing reinstatement works across the area, we are looking forward to the reinvigoration of Binney Reserve for the community to continue to enjoy in the years ahead.”
Community feedback on the revised tree removal and landscape reinstatement plan was gathered through a drop-in session held at Binney Reserve in November 2020, followed by online engagement via the mySay platform.
