The paddle boats are back!
For the first time in 5 years paddle boats are back on Lake Wendouree at the North End of Windmill Drive.
The 10 paddle boats are owned and operated by Stephen McGiffert who applied under the City of Ballarat ‘Expressions of Interest’ for commercial activities on Lake Wendouree.
City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said it was a great addition to the many recreational activities already available on and around the lake.
"The paddle boats all carry a Certificate of Operation under the Australian Maritime Safety Authority as a requirement to operate. The area they launch from is one of the more sheltered areas of the lake from prevailing winds and in perfect proximity to the playground, tram, toilets, botanical gardens and food outlets,” Cr Moloney said.
“The paddle boats are very much in line with our Lake Wendouree Masterplan undertaken in 2017 with community consultation and supports the lake as a regional destination for water-based sports and activities,” he said.
The City of Ballarat is responsible for maintaining the weed cutting within Lake Wendouree without which such activities as sailing, rowing, kayaking and fishing and now paddle boats would not be able to operate.
“Few regional cities have a lake in their heart that is so full of life and supports so many different activities. Council recognises the value, socially, economically, and recreationally such an asset brings to the community. There is a balance between natural assets and man-made attractions and facilities, and sustainability is at the forefront of our strategic planning considerations.”
The paddle boats are weather dependent but will operate every day from 10am to 7pm.
The paddle boats on Lake Wendouree will add yet another fun option to the lake’s many recreational activities both on and off the water this summer.
