Mayors Message Thursday 28 October 2021

Update from the Mayor

Mayor’s Message

Tomorrow is an exciting day for Ballarat as we once again welcome back family, friends, and visitors to our lovely city. For our local business and the community, it has been a long and tough time. However, what a time of year to have our visitors back, the weather’s warming, the parks, gardens, and lake are all in their spring finery and there are a myriad of restaurants, cafes, shops, and attractions to get out and enjoy.

Over the past 18 months or so the massive part our pets play in our lives has really struck home. Dogs and cats are a huge part of our social and domestic life and along with our other pets have contributed to our personal welfare more than we may give credit to.

Whilst most animals are loved and looked after, some are not, or for different reasons need help, whether that be veterinary, training or simply shelter and some love.

This week the City of Ballarat ramps up its advocacy to Victorian Government for funding to deliver a purpose-built Regional Animal Shelter, which would serve the needs of Ballarat and the municipalities of Hepburn, Moorabool, Golden Plains, Pyrenees, Ararat and Central Goldfields.

The City of Ballarat has committed $200,000 to develop detailed plans of that new purpose-built animal shelter.

Funding to construct a new regional animal facility, will represent the single biggest improvement to animal welfare services in this region in a century.

A new, fully compliant regional animal facility will enhance the quality of life and standard of care delivered to the hundreds of stray, lost, abandoned, or abused animals from around the region that pass through the City of Ballarat’s animal shelter each year.

Let’s enjoy having our visitors back and please if you haven’t already, get vaccinated, maintain social distancing and wear a mask, when and where we need to.
