Mayor's Message - Thursday 21 July

Alfredton Recreation Reserve

One of the most rewarding aspects of being Mayor of Ballarat is being able to assist and successfully influence the delivery of services that make a positive difference across so many areas of our community. Just in the last few days we have seen a couple of great examples of this within the key areas of transport, community health and wellbeing, and lifelong learning.

Currently the City of Ballarat is advocating for a review of Ballarat’s urban bus services to help the network better meet the needs of our community and visitors. The City’s recent Integrated Transport Action Plan identified bus network reform as a key transport issue and with rising petrol prices and increased growth it is time to look at greater efficiencies in travel time and bus routes so that catching a bus in Ballarat becomes a viable and pleasurable transport option.

In another recent win for local sport, I had the pleasure in being part of the opening for the Alfredton Recreation Reserve Development. Thanks to Victorian Government funding of $3.7million, Cricket Victoria’s $75,000 and the City of Ballarat’s contribution of $1.2million the complex can now enjoy a host of new amenities including female-friendly change rooms, kitchen, public toilets, cricket nets, electronic scoreboard, undercover viewing, carparking, fencing and more in a truly well-resourced recreational hub.

Libraries play an often understated, yet incredibly important role within our community. They can be the inspiration and catalyst for young students to become researchers, historians, film makers, hobbyists, and business professionals as they open the door to lifelong learning. So, it really is with great excitement that the Ballarat Library just a few days ago released the tender for its first major redevelopment and expansion since 1993.

Such progress does not come easily, and it is a credit to the people of Ballarat for stepping forward and contributing their input to help guide and assist the City of Ballarat in delivering such future assets.
