Mayor's Message - Friday 14 April

Mayor Des Hudson with Ballarat Tramway Museum conductor and women from Sovereign Hill and Craft Lab 23

This week we launched the award-winning Ballarat Heritage Festival at the Ballarat Tramway Museum.

This 2023 festival has a bumper program, and we are anticipating 20,000 people to attend the latest instalment in Ballarat.

The 10-day festival will run from 19-28 May and continues to expand on the event that has been held every year since 2007.

This year, there will be more than 50 events delivered in collaboration with a diverse range of community groups from across the city.

The Ballarat Heritage Festival is so uniquely Ballarat and provides a great opportunity for us to showcase our complex and rich history each year.

We encourage Ballarat residents to attend the festival, but also invite their friends and family to come along as well, because we know visiting friends and family is vital for the Ballarat economy.

This year I’m looking forward to the Candlelight Concerts on Friday 26 May, where some of the greatest pieces of film music of the modern era will be played in the candlelit Ballarat Civic Hall.

We also see the return of the Craft Lab over the weekends of 20 and 21 May and 27 and 28 May. It is a great celebration of traditional artisanal skills coupled with a contemporary flair.

The Heritage Harvest weekend is a great way to explore the flavours of Autumn at the specially curated food and producers' market at Sovereign Hill.

The Ballarat Heritage Festival is a huge event on our calendar that brings a lot of visitors to our city, but also delights locals and instils a sense of pride.
