Don’t sleep on it – clean up with Half Price Mattress Week
From tomorrow, for one week only, residents can dispose of an old mattress for just $15 at the Ballarat Transfer Station as part of Half Price Mattress Week.
From Saturday 26 November to Friday 2 December, the cost of mattress disposal is halved from the normal price of $30 for residents across the municipality.
Mattresses are then transported to a Melbourne facility for recycling, where they are shredded with the springs, foam and wood recovered for recycling.
In 2021, 472 mattresses were disposed of at the Ballarat Transfer Station for the month of November with 232 disposed of during Half Price Mattress Week.
City of Ballarat Councillor Tracey Hargreaves encouraged residents to take their mattresses to the Ballarat Transfer Station for recycling as part of Half Price Mattress Week.
“Mattresses are just one of many household items that can be recycled,” she said.
“Taking old mattresses to the Ballarat Transfer Station as part of Half Price Mattress Week is cost effective and helps to minimise our environmental impact.”
Each year, the City of Ballarat provides Half Price Mattress Week and Free Green Waste Week to assist residents to clean up around the house or in their gardens.
Free Green Waste Week was held from 12 to 20 November, with residents encouraged to drop off their domestic green waste free of charge to the Ballarat Transfer Station.
More than 1,320 cubic meters of green waste was dropped off during Free Green Waste Week compared with 485 cubic meters the week prior.
The City of Ballarat Transfer Station is located at 119 Gillies Street South, Alfredton.
