Consultation at the Walter Jones Memorial Park
The City of Ballarat has undertaken community consultation regarding fencing at the Walter Jones Memorial Park after being approached by several residents in relation to the proximity of off-lead dogs and playground equipment.
Consultation at the popular Walter Jones Memorial Park received submissions from more than 150 community members as well as approximately 35 people attending a drop-in session at the park to discuss the best use of the park and fencing.
The City of Ballarat received mixed support for a fencing change proposal, with residents raising safety concerns for children if the park was no longer fully fenced. A number of community members also expressed a desire for more dedicated off-lead dog park amenities.
Due to the mixed responses in the community consultation, no changes will be made to the Walter Jones Memorial Park at this time.
Feedback received from the consultation is being reviewed and the City of Ballarat will continue to work with the community to address any safety concerns at the park.
City of Ballarat Councillor Samantha McIntosh said it was wonderful to receive a wide range of voices and opinions from the community who are passionate about their local parks.
“We really appreciate people taking the time to attend sessions and discuss the Walter Jones Memorial Park with us. It helps us to understand what the community wants and needs from facilities like this,” she said.
“Neighbourhood parks are important outdoor spaces for all residents. It’s great that so many members of the local community let us know how they use the space, so we can make the best decision for all users of Walter Jones Memorial Park.”
There are a fantastic range of open spaces and playgrounds throughout Ballarat for the whole family to enjoy. You can view an interactive map of Ballarat’s play spaces here.
There are also many off-lead and designated dog parks in Ballarat, and they can be viewed on the City of Ballarat’s website.
Your dog must be kept on a lead at all times, including when at the Walter Jones Memorial Park. Dogs may only be off lead at designated ‘Off Leash’ areas.
Dogs can be exercised off a lead in many reserves and parks, but they must remain under control and be continually supervised and under effective control.
It is also a requirement to have dogs under effective control if your dog is within 50 metres of children’s play equipment area and an organised sports event or practice.
