City of Ballarat ramps up road repairs and rebuild programs

The City of Ballarat will repair and resurface more than 170 residential roads across the municipality this spring and summer, while 27 projects will include complete reconstruction of roads as well as major intersection upgrades. 

Tenders will soon be released for the repair and resurfacing of local roads across the municipality, covering about 8.6 per cent of the City of Ballarat’s total sealed road network. 

This includes 91 roads, covering 367,015 square metres, targeted for resealing and 82 roads, covering 29,110 square metres, targeted for major patching. 

An additional 27 projects include the reconstruction of 15 kilometres of sealed and unsealed roads. The roads set to be upgraded under the City of Ballarat’s annual capital works program were selected based on the City of Ballarat’s proactive and reactive inspections as well as community feedback. 

Works also include major intersection upgrades with a new roundabout to be built at Gregory Street West and Ring Road and another at Warrenheip and Navigators Roads. The investment includes $4.4 million of Federal Government funding from programs such as Black Spot funding ($2.4 million), Local Road and Community Infrastructure program ($500,000) and Roads to Recovery program ($1.5 million). 

The projects include a section of Coghills Creek Road, between Pickford and Glendonald Roads, which will be widened and sealed shoulders built as part of a major safety upgrade. 

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said the works will deliver better and safer roads for residents and visitors to our municipality. 

“The City of Ballarat is investing more in road repairs and road renewal right across our municipality,” he said. 

“Our crews will work throughout the next seven months to repair and rebuild our roads, returning them to the high standard that the community deserves and expects.” 

The City of Ballarat maintains more than 1,200 kilometres of sealed roads and 390 kilometres of unsealed roads across the municipality.  

Not all roads are the responsibility of the City of Ballarat. While the City of Ballarat is responsible for local roads, VicRoads is the responsible authority for arterial roads. 

As part of the Keeping Ballarat Moving program, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) is currently upgrading the intersections of:  

• La Trobe Street and Wiltshire Lane  

• Albert Street and Docwra Street  

• Hertford Street and Albert Street; and 

• Wiltshire Lane and the Glenelg Highway.  

RRV has also started works to create a new roundabout at the intersection of Dyson Drive and Ballarat-Carngham Road.  

“We are conscious that the combined work of City of Ballarat upgrades to local roads and State Government upgrades to the major intersections will be very noticeable over the coming months, and we’ll do our best to coordinate the activity,” Cr Moloney said. 

“Over the wet months it’s not possible to do much more than minor, temporary patches to damaged roads, so we need to undertake the more significant resurfacing during the warmer period to have longer lasting benefits.”
