Ballarat to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

Ballarat residents are invited to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the service of their country at the 2022 Remembrance Day services. 

This year will be the first time since 2019 the commemoration has been held without COVID restrictions, with the proceedings once again open to anybody who wishes to pay their respects. 

Remembrance Day – first held at the end of World War I by all Commonwealth nations – commemorates soldiers who have died in the line of duty with a minute’s silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. 

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Des Hudson said it was a fitting time to recognise those who sacrificed so much for Australia to be the country it is today. 

“It is so important that we continue to remember those who fought and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for Australia,” Cr Hudson said. 

“Especially with so much trouble in the world now, it makes you stop and realise the tragedy and heartache that comes with war. 

“World War I had a significant impact on the Ballarat community, so it is crucial we never forget the sacrifices that were made.”

Arch of Victory, Sturt Street: 9.30–10am  

Ballarat RSL, Ballarat Cenotaph, Sturt Street: 10.30–11.30am  

Buninyong RSL, Memorial Park: 10.40am 

Sebastopol RSL, Sebastopol Cenotaph, Albert Street: 10.50am   

Ex-POW Memorial, Lake Wendouree, Carlton Street: 11–11.45am 

Traffic Information 

For the safety of participants and all road users, the following traffic alterations will be installed for Sturt Street between 10am to 12pm:  

• Sturt Street eastbound will be closed between Lyons Street and Dawson Steet from approximately 10am-12pm. Detours in place via Mair Street.  

• Sturt Street westbound will remain open, but limited to one-lane traffic with speed limits reduced to 40km/h.  

• Traffic will not be able to cross Sturt Street via the Lyons Street intersection in either direction.  

Short delays are expected; therefore, all road users are reminded to approach the area with caution and follow the direction of traffic marshals and police.  

Pedestrian access to shops and services will remain accessible.
