Draft Gambling Harm Minimisation Policy out for community feedback

The City of Ballarat is seeking community feedback on its Draft Gambling Harm Minimisation Policy.

The policy outlines the City of Ballarat’s position, responsibilities, commitments, and approach to preventing gambling-related harm in Ballarat and replaces the previous City of Ballarat Gaming Machine Community Policy.

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said, while gambling is a legal activity, it also has the potential for negative social and economic impacts for the player, their family and friends, and the wider community.

“Gambling-related harm can include financial loss, relationship breakdown, emotional or psychological distress, issues with work or study, criminal activity and reduced health and wellbeing,” Cr Moloney said.

“Whilst there are many different forms of gambling, the most predominant source of financial loss and harm in Australia comes from electronic gaming machines. It is also the form of gambling over which Ballarat City Council has greater influence through its statutory roles and decision-making processes.

“It is important we hear the community’s views on how we can work together to best minimise gambling related harm.”

A MySay page has been set up for community consultation and will be open from 28 October to 18 November.

A hard copy of the survey can also be obtained by contacting the City of Ballarat on 5320 5500.
