Visitors return to Art Gallery

Art Gallery Ballarat

After three months’ closure, the Art Gallery of Ballarat has reopened with a new online booking system.

Mayor of Ballarat Cr Ben Taylor said the re-opening was a much-anticipated event.

“I know many people have missed spending time in this wonderful facility and are ready to experience the truly fascinating exhibitions that the Gallery offers,” he said.

Gallery Director Louise Tegart said Gallery staff had been working hard to ensure that all visitors could be assured a safe and enjoyable experience when they return.

“We have set up a booking system of free timed tickets, to limit the number of people in the Gallery at any one time, and to ensure the strict social distancing, contact tracing and COVID-19 cleaning regimes can be followed,” she said.

Anyone interested in visiting the Gallery is encouraged to go online to the Gallery website and book a time to visit at artgalleryofballarat.com.au

Essential building and maintenance works as well as a collection rehang have been undertaken during the period of closure which means the Gallery’s permanent collection will remain closed until September while these are completed.

Exhibitions currently showing:

Stagecraft is a survey of works from the last five years by the Ballarat-born international artist David Noonan, who creates moody black and white collages and tapestries

His images are theatrical, haunting and ambiguous. There is a stunning catalogue for the exhibition which can be purchased online at the Gallery website.

The second exhibition, Strange Ways, is a survey exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Anne Wallace, covering 30 years of her career. Wallace’s intriguing, richly coloured paintings reference film noir, Modernism and mid-century homes.
