Statement from the Mayor re: ABS unemployment figures for Ballarat

News Update

Ballarat Mayor, Cr Ben Taylor has described May ABS unemployment figures for his City as heart breaking and says consideration must be given to regional economies hit hardest by COVID-19.

The City is actively pursuing bids for stimulus funding for the City and will continue to look for opportunities that will get people back into work.

“We have and will continue to develop and implement short-term and long-term economic recovery plans to help our businesses and the economy rebuild,” he said.

“Importantly, we have eased the pressure on many businesses, fast-tracking permits and foregoing a lot of the red tape, to ensure where possible, businesses can remain operating.

“Council has also been mindful of the importance of continuing to roll out its capital works program, to provide jobs for local companies and trades to continue to stimulate the economy,” he said.

Cr Taylor is urging Ballarat residents to buy and shop local and stay close to home, in support of the region’s retail, hospitality and tourism industries.
